Presidents Report February 2009

Just a short report from me this month and mainly a huge thank you to the members who helped make the All American Day for 2009 the most successful ever. It was the 26th time this event was held at Castle Towers and the 27th Anniversary of the show.

We celebrated in great style with over 550 Stunning American vehicles on display. There was a record number of Hot Rods, Mopars and Commercial vehicles and nearly 200 Mustangs; many of which we haven’t had there before. We had a military vehicle display, the low-riders and a few modified bikes. The PT Cruisers came out in force as did the Camaro/Firebirds.

The weather was perfect; hot and sunny but with a breeze to keep things pleasant. There was music from a live 3 piece grunge band and Elvis (Steve Head) was there to add to the atmosphere.

The Castle Towers management were very supportive of the day with set up going smoothly and they even supplied a professional spruiker to give the sponsors and trade stands great exposure.

Thank you to all the sponsors who contributed to the trophy categories and added to the day by displaying their wares and offering advice to the huge amount of entrants and public in attendance. Bruce, Ken and I will have a de-brief with the centre management but we know they were very impressed as most of the day 2 of their staff were present, even for the presentation.

A couple of minor issues; one being traffic movement throughout the day. This really has to be kept to a minimum and there will be no cars driving past the podium during the presentation next year. Secondly we will do our best to have the presentation at least on time (3pm), if not at 2.30pm and possibly move the podium to take advantage of some shade for the presenter (me!) and the audience

Once again thank you to all who supported the day.

On a sad note you would be aware of the passing of Vandra Buckland, loving wife of long time member and one of the All American Day organisers, Ken. With Vandra being there on the gate for so many years prior this year’s blockbuster event was a fitting tribute to her.

Thank you to all who attended her funeral the following Tuesday with some travelling from Newcastle and Canberra to farewell a wonderful lady.

I remember 10 to 15 years ago we used to hold the committee meetings at Ken and Vandra’s home and looked forward to see what delights Vandra would cook up for us while we discussed Club matters. Vandra supported Ken and the club from day one; travelling everywhere with him to show his cars and helping out at events whenever she could. Her shy but smiling face will be sorely missed.

We now look forward to the American Muscle Car Show at the Entrance, the Valentine’s Day show in Canberra and the Anniversary Pony Round up at Vineyard.

The last event with a date to be confirmed to fit around the Nationals in Ballarat and those travelling to the US for the 45th celebrations.

Now we welcome to the following new members and look forward to meeting them at a future event.
